Obituary for Leonard William Kerr(from Charlotte Observer, Charlotte, NC 4-5-1996)

Mr. Leonard W. Kerr, 78, died April 4, 1996, at Presbyterian Hospital.
A service to celebrate his life is 1 p.m. Saturday in the Hankins & Whitington Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Debell officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A native Charlottean, Mr. Kerr was a graduate of Technical High School and a member of Belmont Park United Methodist Church (now University Memorial). He attended Air Force flight training in Texas and was a B17 bomber pilot. During the Koren Conflict, he served as a rescue pilot. He later served as a helicopter pilot in Washington, D. C, and also did a tour of duty in the Philippines. After 22 years of service in the Air Force and achieving the rank of Major, he retired while stationed at Montgomery, AL, and became a member of the Retired Officers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Stewart Kerr;two daughters, Mary Cynthia Powers of San Francisco, CA, and Julie Kerr Coogan and her husband, Tom of Charlotte; three sons, Jim Kerr and his wife, Brady, of Flowery Branch, GA, Stephen Joel Kerr and his wife Doris, of Kannapolis, and Gregory Scott Kerr of Charlotte; one stepson, Wilbur Holland of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Stephanie Coogan, Taylor Coogan, Joel Kerr and Stewart Kerr; three step-grandchildren, Stewart Holland, Misty Holland and Brian Holland; two sisters, Ruby Sinclair of Norfolk, VA, and Mary Belle Foard of Charlotte; and one brother, Louis Kerr of Charlotte.
He is preceded in death by three brothers and one sister, Julius (Jake) Kerr, Edwin Kerr, Harvey Kerr and Ethel Brewer.
