Robert D. Tearman

Robert D. Tearman, 70, died Thursday at his residence in Franklin.

He was born April 8, 1926, in Whiteland. His parents were George Otis and Edith Mae (Kinnick) Tearman. He married Virginia King Tearman May 30, 1969, in Franklin. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Shannon Hamm and Patricia Finney, both of Greenwood, and Dale Anne Goldsmith of Edinburgh; one son, Robert L. Tearman of Trafalgar; two stepsons Travis Bowman of Edinburgh and Charles M. Bowman II of Eufaula, Ala.; four sisters, Bessie Klostermeyer of Waldron, Mary Bensheimer of Greenwood, Joann Spicer of Princeton and Phyllis Bradfield of Hope, Mich.; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Basham; and two brothers, Charles Tearman and John Tearman.

He was a 1944 graduate of Whiteland High School.

He was employed by R.O. Barber Trucking Co. as a driver for 37 years. He also was employed as a trucker by Johnson County Highway Department and was a farmer.

He served as Amity Fire Department chief from 1974 to 1976. He was the department's first chief.

He was a member of Jubilee Masonic Lodge 746, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, Johnson County Shrine and Teamsters Union 135.

The Rev. Bryant Hansen will conduct a service at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted this evening Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
