Walter Hartzog (given name was Charles Walter, but he referred to himself by his middle name) was the son of Charles Wesley and Clara L Hartzog. Charles Wesley and Clara were farmers in Granite Township, Phillips County, KS.

Walter married Agnes Hopper on March 10, 1920. There is no record they had any children. In the 1930 and 1940 census, Charles and Agnes were living with Charles' parents on their farm in Granite Township, Phillips County, KS. His uncle, Arthur Edwin Hartzog (Charles Wesley's brother) lived nearby.

A handwritten obituary provided by the funeral home that handled his burial, noted the following:

In 1928 he joined the Masonic Lodge #231 A.F. and A.M. of Long Island, Kansas where he served as Worshipful Master in 1931, 1933, 1936, 1938, and 1940. He was also a member of Marguerite Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Patron of that order several times. He had been a member of the Masonic Fraternity for over 49 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes on April 10, 1977 and leaves to mourn a brother, Karl Hartzog of Denver, Colorado; two sisters, Vivian Hartzman of Littleton, Colorado and Mary Ferguson of La Habra, California; a niece of Ft. Collins, Colorado; a nephew of Lincoln, Nebraska; and three nieces and five nephews, children of Mary Ferguson of the Los Angeles area.

On May 3, 1977 [three weeks before he died] he became a member of the United Methodist Church of Alma, Nebraska. His wife Agnes died six weeks before his death.

Walter is buried next to his wife Agnes, his brother Arthur Seneca Hartzog, and Arthur's wife, Nellie Luise Sophie [Barg] Hartzog.

His parents are also buried in the Long Island Cemetery.
