Mrs. "Elma" Gumaer of rural Fairbury, Neb. died June 23,1972 in a Lincoln Neb. hospital at the age of 70 years 4 months and 22 days.
Elma Iona was born to John R. Purdy and Martha Ann Locke Feb. 01, 1902 in Arkansas City Ks. one of a family of nine children. Her mother and father passed away while she was an infant. At age of 13 months she was adopted by Mr and Mrs George (Dora) Bloom.
Her early life was spent in Steele City Community where she was graduated from Steele City High School in 1922.She cared for her mother for several years.
She was employed at the Steele City Bank and the J.W. dry goods store in Fairbury.
On Dec. 25, 1926 she married Willard C. Gumaer of Lincoln in Steele City. They resided in Fairbury from 1929 to 1934, where they moved to a farm, their present home in the Thompson vicinity.
Mrs Gumaer was a charter member of the neighborhood Up and Doers Club which was organize in 1939. She was also a member of Vashti Chapter No. 68, Order of Eastern Star of Fairbury and the Royal Neighbors Lodge of Steele City.
Mrs Gumaer was a faithful member of the Congregational Church of Steele City and when the Church unitied with the Presbyterian Church she worked faitfully in many capacities to help raise money for the building of the present Church. She transferred her membership to the Unitied Methodist Church in Fairbury on Jan. 23, 1951. She was a member of the Women's Society Christian Service as long as her health permitted.
Her Parents and seven brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
Surviving are her Husband; sister, Mary Locke of Topeka KS. several nephews and nieces and a cousin Mrs Blanche Zafke of Backus Minnesota.
Funeral services were June 27 in the United Methodist Church with Pastor Herbert W. Jackman officiating, assisted by Rev. Ernest Almquist of Brainard Minnesota. Mrs. Ralph Chech Sr. was organist and Mrs Marvin Wurm sang. Interment was in the Fairbury Cemetery.
Pallbearers was Paul Bishop, Merle Watts Paul Goebel, Amos Hamm, Floyd Lichty Sr. and Wilbur Hanson. Honorary Pallbearers Joe Cacak, Leonard Hammer, Charles Hindman, Joe LaBass, Darrel Buchmeier, Fred Oerter, Harry Williams, Orra Hein, Rupert Hughes and Francis Reedy.
