George H. Dowil, 83, Washington, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at his home. Mr. Dowil was born May 27, 1922, in Poplar Bluff to Frank Dowil and his wife Nealie, nee Clements. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of T-5. Mr. Dowil was united in marriage to Gertrude Manhart on June 15, 1946, in Washington. He was a member of the American Legion Post 218 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2661. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, Mr. Dowil was a Fourth Degree Knight. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife on Feb. 25, 1999. Mr. Dowil is survived by four sons, Glennon Dowil and wife Barbara, and John Dowil and wife Cheryl, all of Washington, Thomas Dowil and wife Ruth Ann, and Gene Dowil and wife Agnes, all of Union; four daughters, Georgiann Pharis and husband Gene, Alpharetta, Ga., Mary Kay Trentmann and husband Keith, Dutzow, Debra Albright and husband Harvey, Washington, and Dena Fuhr and husband Robert, Augusta; one brother, Leo Dowil and wife Wilma, Washington; one sister, Opal Konys, Washington; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 20, at St. Francis Borgia Church, Washington, with the Rev. Greg Klump officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials to the St. Francis Borgia Renovation Fund or the American Cancer Society are preferred. The family was served by Miller Funeral Home, Washington.
