Birth: Feb. 24, 1809
Union County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Oct. 27, 1879
Oktibbeha County
Mississippi, USA

Levina was first married to John HAYES. They had two known children, Sarah Frances b. 1831 and Thomas b. c1834.

John HAYES was shown on the 1830 census for Union County, South Carolina living near Elias HIGH. He and his wife were the only members of that household. That is believed to have been John HAYES and Levina HIGH, probably as newlyweds. Thanks to Mona Tomlinson for finding this HAYES family on that census page.

John HAYES apparently died bef. 1840. Levina later married Daniel Camp BLACKWELL bef. 1842. They had three known children, Lydia Ann b. 1842, Eliza b. c1844, and John Daniel b. c1848.

Levina's first name is frequently misspelled on the internet and sometimes elsewhere as Levinia. But, it was recorded as Levina in two old family Bibles (her father's and her sister's). Her name was pronounced with emphasis on the middle syllable and sounded like "vine."

She is believed to have been named for her father's mother, Levina JACKSON whose given name was clearly spelled as Levina in some old legal documents. Also, the name with spelling "Levina" shows up several times in Elias' and Sarah's descendants' families.

Some of this information is from "High Family Notes," a 772-page family history book compiled by the late Grace HIGH LAWRENCE of Dothan, AL and with whom Bob Webb collaborated prior to Grace's death. Bob is descended from Elias and Sarah through their 5th child, John Thomas High.

Some of the information is from transcriptions of Elias HIGH's old family Bible and from Catherine Haldon/Halden HIGH THOMSON's old family Bible.

Some of the information is from other family records handed down to Bob Webb from his maternal grandfather, Marvin Merritte HIGH (1895-1963) who was one of Elias HIGH's great grandsons through his son, John Thomas HIGH.
