FLY, John Dixon, Civil War, Company E, 81st Illinois.
died 7 April, 1935

"John D. Fly, 95, perhaps the oldest Carbondale resident, succumbed late yesterday to senility after an illess of a few days during which he gradually sank into death. Afflict3ed with blindness the last 15 years of his life, Mr. Fly possessed a remarkable constitution and was rarely ill throughout his life, even during his extremely advanced years.

Mr. Fly was married 69 years. His wife died five years ago while in her 98th year. Both were the last member of their respective families. Mr. Fly was the father of five children, two of whom died while children, and two daughters after they reached maturity, Mrs. Levy Chitty, who lived near Carbondale and Mrs. Frank Throgmorton of Marion. He was the father of W.C. Fly, proprietor of the College Book store.

The aged man served in the Illinois 81st Infantry, volunteers during the Civil War, Company E., and took part in at least ten engagements. He was in one battle at Vicksburg in which his regiment entered with 400 men and lost 40. Other engagement included Champion Hills, Guntown, and Mobile.

The veteran was born in Wayne county shortly after his parents came from Tennessee. He and his wife settled south of Carterville in the neighborhood of the Ogden settlement. He was the last remaining member of the Cottage Home G.A.R. post. He became a member of the Chapel Hill Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. in 1887.

A farmer all his life, Mr. Fly came to Carbondale in 1911, retiring. He and his wife lived at College and Illinois avenue.

The funeral will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon and a military burial ceremony will be give the veteran. Rev. Burgess, pastor of the Christian church, will conduct the services. Burial services will be at Oakland in charge of the Masonic lodge."
