Mildred Evelyn 'Mil' Shelly was the daughter of Evelena Alberta Christie (1877-1929) and William Newton Shelley (1876-1929).

Mil graduated from Analy Union High School in 1921, Santa Rosa Junior College in 1923, and Armstrong College in San Francisco in 1924.

On June 16, 1928, she married Warren Yancey Hillard (1902-1991) in Sebastopol, California. No children.

Mildred was employed for many years by the Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools in Santa Rosa while Warren managed the ranch on Spring Hill. Years later, Mildred related taking the trolley train from Sebastopol to Santa Rosa and getting a transfer up Mendocino Avenue to her workplace for just a nickel.

Mildred was the Worthy Matron of Gold Ridge Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in 1952. She enjoyed botany, particularly liking gladioli, azaleas, and rhododendrons.

In November 1953, they sold the ranch and took an extended vacation that included visiting relatives in Pennsylvania and seeing the old Jonathan Brone Hillard farm. They spent the late summer and early fall of 1954 on Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine. They had only planned to stay a few days, but it was so beautiful in the fall that they stayed several weeks.

During a hunting trip in British Columbia, Canada, Mildred was convinced to accompany Warren and their guide on horseback. In her later years, she said she thought she would never endure the pain of riding that horse, but she was so glad she went, as she had never seen anything so beautiful as the country they traversed.

In their later years while my cousin George and I were helping them we always referred to Mil as 'The Classy Lady'.

On October 10, 1993, the Sebastopol Methodist Church dedicated a Diapason Pipe Organ Facade of 134 pipes in the memory of Mildred and Warren Hillard.
