> DODGEVILLE - Richard Wardell Heimerl, age 75, of Dodgeville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. surrounded by his loving family. Dick was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 16, 1930, to Bertha and Charles Heimerl. He always liked to say that he grew up on "tough" street in Linden where his grandparents, Charles and Jenny Slaby raised him. He attended Linden Schools, graduating from high school in 1949. He served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. In 1952, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Biddick (and she is a sweetheart) at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Mineral Point. He attended UW-Platteville and also worked in the lead mines in Shullsburg and Linden. Darlene and Dick farmed near Dodgeville until beginning his police career in 1963. He was Chief of Police in Dodgeville for 17 years until he retired in 1990. He served as the Iowa County Veterans Service Officer for 20 years. In addition, he served on the Iowa County Board as board chairman. He was an honorary life member of the Dodgeville Knights of Columbus Council 4871 and a member of the Fourth Degree Knight's. Dick was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church. He was proud to coordinate volunteer services for the Apostolate to the Handicapped in Monroe. Dick lives on through his beloved wife, Darlene of 53 years; his children, Richard (Cheryl) Heimerl of Portage, Mary (Marcus) Butts of Oshkosh, Elizabeth Heimerl of Dodgeville, Patricia (Nathan) Czech of Fitchburg and Philip (Kathryn) of Dodgeville; his grandchildren, Nicole, Cortney and Kyle Heimerl, Olivia and Evan Butts, Hillary and Molly Czech and JoJo and Lucy Heimerl; his sister, Geraldine (Whitey) Mehlberg; sisters-in-law, Patricia Heimerl and Eileen Geach; his Aunt Marge and Uncle Lawrence Womack; sisters and brothers-in-law, Charles and Dorothy Biddick of Hazel Green, Ruth Ann and Larry Anderson of Baraboo and Sandy and Gordy Thomson of Baraboo; and many loving cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; his beloved brother, Frank; his sister, Nancy; and his brother, Charles. Dick brought out the best in everybody. His unique humor and natural wisdom touched the lives of many. He loved to reminisce and tease and could definitely take a teasing himself. Monday night dinners will never be the same! Dodgeville, Linden and Iowa County will find it hard to fill the void. He sincerely loved his fishing buddies and card playing friends! A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Dodgeville. Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the Linden American Legion and the Dodgeville Area Veterans.
