In 1845, his pioneer family came to Texas. They settled in Henderson County, near Chandler, Texas, where he grew up. He married Othello Hindman, who was the daughter of a Methodist minister in Duncan, Oklahoma where they lived for over seven years. Their two sons were born there. They moved to Mangum, Oklahoma, then to Amarillo, Texas and later to Artesia, New Mexico. In 1908, they moved to Tulia, Texas. He was in the harness and saddle business and later with his son, Claude, operated the Dyer Hardware & Furniture Store on the west side of the square. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias. He became a member of the Baptist church in 1896, serving as a Deacon until his death and was Sunday School superintendent for several years. He helped lead the organization of the First Baptist Church in Artesia, New Mexico.
He died on Sunday, April 26, 1936, at his home on North Rice Avenue in Tulia at the age of 80 years, following an illness of several weeks. Survivors included his wife and two sons, Scott and Claude and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
Services were conducted by Rev. J. Hoyt Boles at the First Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements were by Ramsey & Son Undertaking firm. Pall bearers included James T. Hale, C.E. Duke, O. Hanford, Sam C. Wilkes, Jim Watts and Dennis Zimmerman. Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Scott Dyer and son James Bruce of San Antonio; Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Hindman and daughter, Mrs. John Roberts of Chillicothe, Texas; Mr. John Dyer of Plainview; Julia Dyer Howell of Plainview; Mr. James Cochrane of Plainview; Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Elliff Abernathy, Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Gilleland and daughter, Alice Marie, Pampa; J.M. Simpson, all of Amarillo.
