SPANISH AMERICAN WAR VETERAN
Frederick W. (Fred) Casten was born November 24, 1877 in Toledo, Ohio. His German born father was F. J. Casten and his French born mother was Anna Hattie--.
Enlisted as Private on June 21, 1898 at Hays City, Kansas. Served with Co. "I", 21st Kansas Volunteer Infantry. Mustered out on December 10, 1898.
Mr. Casten applied for admission to the Washington Veterans' Home at the age 61 years. He indicated that he was five foot, eleven inches, had a ruddy complexion, was a resident of Spokane, Washington and had lived continuously in the state since 1918. His occupation was Janitor and he was a widower since June 28, 1938. He had been married in 1905 in Grand Is. Nebraska to Antoinette (Tony) and he had one son living: Fred W. Casten, Jr., age 29, of Spokane.
Mr. Casten was accepted by the Veterans Home on November 19, 1938. Records indicate that he had a wife Gurine who was admitted to the Veterans Home on Sept. 29, 1938. She remarried to Mr. Harry T. Belt on Dec. 3, 1949.

Final rites for Fred W. Casten, 68, Retsil, who died yesterday in a local hospital, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Retsil State Veterans Home. Casten, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, was born Jan. 24, 1877 in Toledo, Ohio. He enlisted in the infantry June 21, 1898 and was discharged Dec. 10, 1898. He was a private in Co. 1, 21st regiment of Kansas.
Surviving are his wife, Gurine, also of the home, and a son, Fred, of Seattle.
Services will be conducted by McKinley Camp 33. Funeral arrangements were made by Miller-Reynolds Funeral home and interment will be in the Retsil cemetery. [Bremerton Sun, June 4, 1946, pg 4]
