James Buchanan
Birth: Apr. 23, 1791
Cove Gap
Franklin County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Jun. 1, 1868
Lancaster County
Pennsylvania, USA

15th United States President. The only President of the United States from Pennsylvania, he was also the only bachelor president. Buchanan was trained as a lawyer and at Dickinson College was known as a top-notch debater. He served five terms in the House of Representatives, 10 years in the Senate, and was appointed minister to Russia, secretary of state under James K. Polk, and minister to Great Britain under Pierce. Thanks to his absence from the country during growing sectional differences, Buchanan defeated his boss for the Democratic nomination for president in 1856, then went on to beat John C. Fremont, standard-bearer for the newly minted Republican party. Despite his Northern connections, President Buchanan felt antipathy toward abolitionists and refused to act in the slavery issue that was dividing the country, preferring to let the Supreme Court decide the issue. (The infamous Dred Scott Decision, that held that the government could not interfere with slave ownership, was supported by Buchanan.) The president also held that Southern states could not secede from the Union, but did little to prevent the impending Civil War. Buchanan did not seek reelection. When he left office on March 4, 1861, he told President-elect Abraham Lincoln that he hoped the former was as happy entering the Executive Mansion as the latter was leaving. He retired in great wealth to his home Wheatland, in Lancaster, Pa. Buchanan wrote a defense of his term, "Mr. Buchanan's Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion." It sold a few thousand copies. (bio by: LincolnFan)
