HAWARDEN, Iowa - Elwood Bolster, 79, of Hawarden died Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997, at the Hawarden Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home. Visitation will resume with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.
Mr. Bolster was born April 29, 1918, in Denver, Colo., the son of Herman and Katherine (Schmidt) Bolster. He graduated from South High School in Denver in 1936. He received his bachelor of science degree in accounting at Denver University in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps., having received his commission at Harvard University, during World War II.
He married Evelyn Linkswiler on June 26, 1945, in Sioux City. The couple lived in Denver, where he was employed as a statistician for the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company until 1947. They moved to Hawarden, where he was employed as the head accountant in the general office of Schoeneman Brothers Lumber Company for 10 years. The couple started the Lyn-El Floral and Greenhouse in 1953, which the operated for 42 years.
He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Phi, the Omicron Delta Kappa and the Phi Epsilon Phi at Denver University. He was a member of the Florists Transworld Delivery for 40 years, the Hawarden Chamber of Commerce, where he received an Achievement Award in 1975 and St. Mary's Catholic Church. He served on the Hawarden City Council for three terms and as the secretary of the Hawarden School Board during their reorganization into West Sioux School.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Bruce "Buck" of Bloomington, Minn.; a daughter and her husband, Betsy and Carter Mollgaard of Miles City, Mont.; and a granddaughter, Megan Mollgaard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Virginia Bolster.
