Civil War Union Brevet Major General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 13, 1862. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 28, 1864 and Major General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
