Philanthropist. A 1786 graduate of Rhode Island College, he was partner in the mercantile firm Brown and Ives with his brother-in-law Thomas P. Ives. During his lifetime he gave the University many thousands of dollars, had Manning Hall and Hope College built and donated land for the President's House and Rhode Island Hall.
