Don Ott, 84, of Le Mars passed away peacefully Thursday morning, July 24, 2008 at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars surrounded by his family.

Donald Peter Harm Ott was born January 2, 1924 on a farm South of Remsen, Iowa to John and Anna (Seggerman) Ott. He was baptized on April 27, 1924 and confirmed April 10, 1938 at Christ Lutheran Church, Remsen, Iowa. He attended country school in Henry Township and helped his father on the farm and always made himself available to help anyone in need.

Don entered the United States Army on April 5, 1945. Following basic training, Don was stationed in the Pacific area of Japan until his discharge on December 7, 1946. Don was united in marriage to Victoria Kuttler on January 22, 1947 at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, Iowa. They farmed South of Remsen until 1959 when they moved to Le Mars due to health problems. Don went to work for Well's Blue Bunny making cottage cheese. Don retired from Well's Dairy in April of 1981.

During his retirement, Don enjoyed helping his daughter and son-in-law on their farm near Craig. Don also enjoyed woodworking. In his woodshop he enjoyed making bird houses and other unique crafts. One of his joys in life was creating wooden toys for his grandchildren and later great grandchildren. For many years Don and Vickie shared their faith by making wooden Christmas ornaments for Sunday School students and the elderly members of Grace Lutheran Church.

Don and Vickie enjoyed going on bus tours and meeting new friends. Don enjoyed visiting with family and his many friends. Don and Vickie enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, and working jigsaw puzzles.

Don has been a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church where he has served as an usher and held several officies. He was also a longtime member of the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Vickie of Le Mars; 2 sons, Duane Ott and his wife Mary and David Ott and his wife Lavonne of Le Mars; a daughter, Donna Schmidt and her husband Russell of Craig; 10 grandchildren: Michael (Becky) Ott, Sarah (Michael) Archer, Matthew (Stephanie) Ott, Julie Ott, Tammy (Rich) Sudtelgte, Justin (Alicia) Ott, Sheila (Shawn) Sypersma, Jon (Amy) Schmidt, Adam (Amy) Schmidt, and Andy (Kari) Schmidt; 13 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Arnold and Colleen Ott of Remsen and Curtis and Doris Ott of Kingsley; 2 sisters-in-law, Hilda Mohning of Le Mars and Margaret and Merlin Mohning of Hotchkiss, Colorado; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna (Seggerman) Ott; a brother-in-law, Arnold Mohning; mother and father-in-law, Jacob and Elise Kuttler.
