Annie was born in 1889 in Rector, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Louis D. and Eliza J. Lamb Dortch. Her mother died when she was a baby. Her father remarried whithin a couple of years, to Irene Haneline. Annie had seven half-brothers and sisters.

On December 13, 1908, Annie married William David Wesley "West" Hampton. They had six children: Nora Willie Hampton Fultz, Enos Louis Hampton, Enos's twin sister who died at birth, Dora "Irene" Hampton Phillips, Marie Hampton Huckabay, and Willodene Hampton Terry. The children went to the Tokio School just outside of Rector. Wes and Annie were known as Mommy and Papa to their children, and Ma and Pa Hampton to everyone else.

Ma Hampton died in 1965, and Pa died in 1973, both in Paragould.
