Death: Jul. 17, 2010

Musician. A prolific guitarist, he successfully alternated between Country and Popular music. The Louisiana native's musical interests were shaped growing up listening to a variety of genres including Country & Western, Blues and Jazz, and he gained early experience with Roy Orbison and Dale Hawkins. Carter established himself as a much in demand sessions musician who worked with a wide range of recording artists during his career. His guitar playing can be heard on Marty Robbins' "El Paso" (1959), Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady, Lay" (1969), and Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer" (1969). In addition, he was known for his association with artists Levon Helm and Conway Twitty. Carter was the father of Country Music star Deana Carter. He died of complications from a stroke. (bio by: C.S.)
