Gene J. Bricker
Birth: Aug. 3, 1938
Death: Dec. 10, 1983

Musician. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bricker was a tenor singer with the rhythm and blues musical group, The Marcels. They are best remembered for their 1961 hit single, "Blue Moon." The song sold well over a million copies, hit number one on the UK singles charts, and was named one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. They were also one of the first group to turn doo wop into rock and roll. Formed in 1959, the group also included lead singer Cornelius Harp, bass player Fred Johnson (Allen's brother), Ron Mundy, and Richard Knauss. In 1961, Bricker and Knauss left the group and were replaced by Allen Johnson and Fred Maddox. A year after that Allen Johnson and Harp left and were replaced with William Herndon and Richard Harris. The group disbanded not to long after that, but continued on through the years with brief reunions or former band members creating similar bands, notably the Walt Maddox and Fred Johnson versions. Gene Bricker passed away on December 10, 1983, at the age of 45. The Marcels were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002. Other recordings by The Marcels include, 'Melancholy Baby,' 'Heartaches,' and 'Goodbye To Love.' (bio by: K)
