My Great Great Great Grandfather

The murder of
John Garrison Morris

John Garrison Morris born 1816 in Hightstown, New Jersey, was murdered March 16, 1865 in his home , 1/2 mile south of Oconee, Illinois, in Shelby County.
Men by the names of Trammel, Welch and Hastings, the guard, came to The Morris house, asking to stay all night, but grandmother, (Sarah Holmes Morris) told them that there was smallpox in the house, Minnie and Lee Ballard.(grandchildren of Sarah and John. ) So they turned away walked down the railroad track, but came back and shot Grandpa Morris as he was eating his supper. He had just arrived home from the saw mill, he had also been to Pana that day to pay Mr. Hayward ,$1500.00 for Timber land. The men took around $300.00 from his person.
Sarah, with Mary Ballard; (John and Sarah's daughter) and her two children, Minnie and Lewis ; and Libby, (Elizabeth Price Gaskill) were in the house at the time of the shooting, John and Sarah's two sons ; Charles and William Henry Morris, were unyolking the oxen, when they heard the report of the gun.
The men escaped, but were later capured at a place called, "Old Vanburenburg's " on "The Hurricane", by men , John Evans and a Mr. Isabel, with a posse of men on horseback. They were in a saloon, playing cards. They were brought to Oconee. A trial was started, but mob of people chiefly from Buckeye Prairie, hung two of the men Trammel and Welch , in an old Freight house in Oconee. Hastings turned states evidence, stood his trial and was cleared, the mob would have hung him too but his arms were loosen and he jumped the train with some of the men, and was taken to Shelbyville, Illinois and placed in jail, for his own protection. Almost a month passed between John's death and the capture of the murderers.
