He was the son of John Newkirk (4 Mar 1787-14 Jan 1861) and Elizabeth Osburn (1825-). He married Janie Thorpe on December 8, 1887 in Fountain County, Indiana. They had six children together. One female child was born August 22, 1888 and did not survive.

"Covington Farmer Dies of Injury – Washington Newkirk, age 87, a retired farmer, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth hospital, Danville, where he had been a patient 11 days. Mr. Newkirk mad his home with Mr. and Mrs. David Moudy south of Covington.

An inquiry was conducted by Coroner John Cole, who attributed death to pneumonia and shock, following an injury. Mr. Newkirk suffered a broken left arm April 14, while trimming a tree.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home, with the Rev. O.W. McGaughey officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington.

Mr. Newkirk was born October 4, 1859 in Fountain County, son of John and Elizabeth Osborn Newkirk. He was preceded in death by his wife and three sons.
