Birth: Apr. 17, 1920
Lamar County
Texas, USA
Death: Mar. 19, 1937
Smith County
Texas, USA

Daughter of Ernest B. and Mary M. Cole, she was living with her sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and James Brown Dodson, in order to attend school in New London.

Helen's monument is unique: it has her name and the dates she lived on the west side, an inscription on the top, and a colorized photo of her on the east side. The inscription reads: "She was kind, affectionate, and friendly to all. A victim of the New London school disaster." Apparently, at one time, she also had a footstone made of tiles, but little is left of that now.

Helen was a victim of the explosion at the junior/senior high school in New London, TX. She succumbed to her injuries the day after the tragedy.

From an unknown newspaper:

"HELEN COLE, BLAST VICTIM IS BURIED-- Emberson Girl, Killed in London Catastrophe, Buried At Caviness. Last rites were held Saturday afternoon at Emberson at the Baptist church for Helen Cole, 18 year old victim of the New London school disaster, Thursday. The service was conducted by the Rev. Leslie O. Evans of Lone Oak, assited by the Rev. N. C. Walters of Powderly, Baptist ministers, and burial was made at Mt. Tabor Cemetery at Caviness. Emberson-Brown-Roden funeral home had charge and pallbearers were Rush Miller, Arless Dickens, James E. Crain, Ned Colvert, Dodson Hanes and Jack E. Dodson. Miss Cole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cole of Emberson, was staying with her sister, Mrs. J. B. dodson, while attending the New London consolidated high school, this being her second term there. She died of injuries and shock about 11:30 o'clock, Thursday night in a Tyler hospital where she was taken after the explosion at the school."

(She was actually 16, almost 17, years old, and a senior at the high school.)
