Obituary:
Bud Russell Funeral Rites Planned Wednesday at Blum
Blum, Hill Co, Texas -- Bud Russell, who in more than 40 years with the Texas prison system had been responsible for 115,000 prisoners, will be buried here Wednesday.
Funeral services for Russell will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Blum Baptist Church, with the Rev. Chester Watt of Lovington, N.M., officiating. Burial will be in the Blum Cemetery, under direction of the Crosier-Pearson Funeral Home of Cleburne.
Russell, 79, died late Monday night at his home near Blum. He was born here and had maintained his residence here all his life.
But his work as chief transfer agent for the Texas prison system kept him traveling all over the state until his retirement in 1948. He made the rounds of the county jails, picking up prisoners who had been sentenced to penitentiary terms.
When he first began work, in 1905, there were only 700 men and women in the Texas prison system. At the time he retired there were 10 times that many.
Only once did a prisoner escape from Russell in all his years on the job. That fugitive was later picked up at El Paso by the border patrol, and Russell personally returned him to Huntsville.
Russell was a member of the Blum Baptist Church and for more than 50 years was a member of the Blum Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Jack Russell of Groesbeck; eight daughters, Mrs. O. V. Nickels and Mrs. E. M. Hegar of Meridian; Mrs T. J. Dodson and Miss Ethel Russell of Blum; Mrs. Irvin De Cordova of Groesbeck; Mrs. Buddie Gunter of Fort Worth; Mrs. N. L. B. Davis of Throckmorton, and Mrs. Wesley Martin of Monahans; a brother, B. Russell of Houston; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
