Civil War Union Major General. A career Army officer, he graduated from West Point in 1840, was a veteran of the Seminole and Mexican wars and a cavalry instructor at the academy. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Colonel in the 2nd Cavalry in the Department of the Shenandoah. Promoted Brigadier General in August 1861, he commanded the 1st Division, Army of the Ohio and the 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland, 1862 to 1863. On September 19, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga, after most of the Union Army had fled the field, General Thomas stubbornly held out on the second day at Snodgrass Hill, earning the nickname "The Rock of Chickamauga." He fought at the Battle of Franklin as commander of the Army of the Potomac in November 1864 and for this brilliant victory was promoted Major General in December 1864. After the termination of war he commanded military departments in Kentucky and Tennessee until 1869, when he was ordered to command the division of the Pacific at San Francisco, California, where he died there of apoplexy. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
