General John C. Vaughn, commanded C. S. Gen. John Hunt Morgan's forces after their surrender and was Confederate President Jefferson Davis' escort through Georgia until his capture in Irwinville. He organized the 3rd Tennessee Regiment.

Gen. Vaughn's wife, Martha, his 3 daughters and father were all sent to prison in Illinois by Gen. Sherman. He is the only general on either side whose family was treated in such a way.
His wife died at age 37 in New York. Don't know what she was doing there in 1868, but anyhow she died there. She is supposed to be buried in Tennessee, but the marker says, "In memory of...." a lot of times that means the person is buried somewhere else and this is just a memorial marker.
Gen. Vaughn never saw her again after they had taken her to prison, and ended up a very bitter man.
