John Hope
Birth: Jun. 2, 1868
Death: Feb. 20, 1936

Educator. Born poor in Augusta, Georgia, he became the first black president of Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1906 after joining the faculty in 1898, when it was the Atlanta Baptist College. He attended Brown University, where he graduated in 1894. He returned to Morehouse in 1919 after serving in France with the National YMCA. Upon his return, the new science building was completed in 1920. Hope was also a vice-president for the Citizen Trust Bank in Atlanta. In 1929, he joined with president Florence M. Reid of Spelman College and Myron Adams president of Atlanta University to establish the Atlanta University Center and became president of the new university. He died in 1936 and was buried on the campus of Morehouse College. After his death, the NAACP awarded him the Spingarn Medal. (bio by: Curtis Jackson)
