A member of the Donner/Reed Party.

Little is known about Augustus Spitzer, save for the fact that he was a bachelor, approx. 30-40 years of age and was a driver for the Donner family.

According to accounts from the survivors of the lake entrapment, on December 9, 1846, Spitzer, who had been living in Keseberg's lean-to, "came down the snow-steps of Mrs. Breen's cabin, and fell at full length within the doorway." He was in such a weakened state that he could not rise from the floor. He lingered for another two months. Patty Reed later recalled, "Spitzer died, imploring Mrs. Breen to put a little meat in his mouth so he could just know it was there and he could died easy and in peace. I do not think the meat was given him, but he gave up the ghost and was no more."
