Nathan R. Uttley was born in Elmira, Ontario on October 14, 1867. He was the sixth of seven children born to Nathan Uttley and Lucinda (née Randall), and he was the first born in the new country of Canada which had its confederation on July 1 of that year.
He married Mary Ann Wolfe, daughter of Andreas Wolfe and Sarah Haus on March 18, 1888 in Doon, Ontario. The details are not known but Mary Ann passed away just a year or two later.
Nathan married again with Mary Kercher, daughter of Michael Kercher and Anna Mary Gingrich, on May 11, 1890 in St Jacobs, Ontario. The couple had five children but only the first, Annie Elizabeth, survived to adulthood.
