Major Frank Ignaszewski was held as a Prisoner of War in the Philippine Islands. In December 1944, he was taken to the Port Area of Manila and boarded onto the Oryoku Maru. The ship sailed December 14th at 3:00 A.M. and reached Olongapo , Philippine Islands, the same day. It came under attack by fighter planes from the U.S.S. Hornet and was strafed and bombed. As night approached, the attack was halted.
The next morning the planes returned and continued the attack. During the attack the ship bounced in the water. The ship was hit several times by bombs and bullets ricocheted into the holds. The POWs were ordered to abandon ship. When the planes saw the large number of POWs leaving the holds, the attack was called off. After the POWs were off the ship, the planes returned and sunk it.
The POWs were taken to San Fernando La Union and boarded the Enoura Maru. On December 27th and arrived at Takao, Formosa, around January 1st.
On January 9, 1945, the ship was attacked by American planes. The explosions caused it to bounce in the water. 300 POWs were killed during the attack. The dead were not removed from the ship until January 12th and buried in a mass grave on Formosa. After the war, the remains which were not identified were buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Honolulu, Hawaii.
The surviving POWs were boarded on the Brazil Maru. The ship sailed on January 13th. Ignaszewski died in the ship's hold before it arrived at Moji, Japan, January 29th. His body was thrown into the sea.
