HERBERT J. COLEMAN, 93, of 104 W. North St., Gratis, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 at his home. Born March 8, 1904, he was the son of Alonzo "Lon" and Mary Margaret (Wilkins) Coleman. He was the owner and operator of Coleman's Market and Variety Store in Gratis for the last 60 years. He had worked for Gratis as the first water superintendent, on the Gratis Police Department and was a school bus driver for 18 years. He was a dedicated lifelong member of Gratis United Methodist Church, was a member of the Gratis Odd Fellows Lodge and an honorary fireman. Mr. Coleman distributed his handmade wooden toys by the thousands to all children of the area, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Grace Loucille (Kesler) Coleman; two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Majel Coleman of Dayton, Elizabeth Viola and James A. Beckett of Gratis; a sister-in-law, Eva L. Kesler of Gratis; eight foster children; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Ralph and Earl Coleman; and three sisters, Lucille Coleman, Bessie Morningstar and May Silvers.
Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 13, at Gratis United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harlan Sorensen and the Rev. Hearon Carmack officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
