GEORGE E. GILLETT, 84, Avon, Illinois, died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2005, in Seminary Manor, Galesburg, Knox co., IL.

He was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Avon, IL, the son of Merle D. and Helen L. Edmonson Gillett. He was reared in Avon, IL where he lived his entire life

GEORGE married MARIE HARDI, Feb. 6, 1944, in Coupland, Texas. She survives. He is also survived by three sons; Robert Gillett, Albuquerque, N.M., Randy Gillett, Charleston, and David (Rebecca) Gillett, Avon, IL. One sister; Phyllis Crump, Galesburg, IL and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Daniel; one grandson, Alex; two sisters; and three brothers.

George served in the Army Air Corp during WORLD WAR II, serving as a navigator of B24 bombers in the China, India and Burma Theater where he received two Distinguished Flying Crosses.

He remained in the Air Force Reserve and was called back to active duty in 1951 where he served during the Korean War as a navigator in RB36 reconnaissance bombers.
He retired from the Air Force Reserves in 1969 as a MAJOR.

George was postmaster of Avon, Illinois, from 1954 to 1977. He was a 50-year member of Avon Harmony Lodge 253, and a member of Abingdon American Legion Post 381, Scottish Rite, Mohammed Temple Shrine of Peoria, Reserve Officers Association and Avon United Methodist Church.

Services were held Friday, June 24, 2005, at Corman Memorial Home, Avon, IL. Burial was in HOLEMAN CEMETERY, Avon, Warren County, Illinois, with military honors conducted by Abingdon American Legion Post 381. Memorials may be made to Shriner?s Crippled Children's Fund, Avon First Responders or Avon Harmony Lodge.
