Gerald was born in Morristown March 27, 1908. He was graduated from Moscow High School in 1927 and was a member of the Christian church in that village. While in high school, he was a basketball player. Tomes wrote to his parents reguarly, who received a letter from him last week. The young sailor thought his next flight on the Akron would be to the Pacific coast, having recently returned from a flight to Panama. He had been a member of the Akron crew for four or five months.

Besides his parents, Tomes has a number of brothers and sisters. Mrs. Dwight Beckner, a half sister, lives in Rushville and Mrs Lillian Roberts near Moscow. Blount, Martha, Kennard and Robert Tomes are brothers and sisters.

[Gerald L. Tomes was the son of Mary Clarinda Brown and William Scott Tomes. He died at sea, when the USS Akron went down during a storm over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of New Jersey.]
