During the first years of World War II, he commanded the 8th Infantry Regiment stateside, and then led the regiment during its landing on Utah Beach, France on June 6, 1944. Promoted to Brigadier General, he was the assistant commander of the 2nd Infantry Division and then the commander of the 4th and the 90th Infantry Divisions under General George Patton. By March, 1945, he commanded his own Corps and had earned three stars. In 1947, he was sent to provide operating advice to the Greek government and to administer $400 million in aid.
