He enlisted on March 22, 1862 as a private in 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Co. G. and was made a corporal. Then he was transferred to the 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Co. K where he was a Quarter Master Sergeant. Served in the same company with his brother Edward.
