Durwood was born a son of Dana and Elizabeth (Libby) Brown, and had attended Mexico schools. Durwood passed on with his family by his side.
He served with the U.S. Army as a Corporal from 1950 to 1956 with the 747th Amphibian Tank Battalion.
He worked as a crane operator for Malloy Construction Company at Boise Cascade Paper Company for over 34 years until his retirement in 1991.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, working around the house, and listening to country music. He was also a loyal Red Sox fan.
He was married in Rumford on March 19, 1955, to the former Sally A. MacDonald, who survives of Mexico.
Other survivors include two daughters, Diane Austin and husband, Preston, of Mexico and Debora Melanson and husband, Albert, of Rumford; two sons, Danny Brown of Mexico and Douglas Brown and wife, Debra, of Peru; six sisters, Rita Marston of Sun City, Ariz., Shirley Lashon and husband, Francis, of Skowhegan, Linda Daigle of Arundel, Katherine Thibodeau of Mexico, and twins, Denise Tremblay and husband, Lionel, of Old Orchard Beach and Donna Lapaglia of Mexico; nine grandchildren, Eric Austin of Roxbury, Todd Austin and wife, Kendra, of Plymouth, N.H., Preston Austin Jr. and companion, Audrey Nelson, of Portland, Cory Melanson of Windham, Jason Melanson of Portland, Jennifer Melanson and companion, Kenn McAllister of Windham, Megan Brown of Rumford, and Kurtis and Trevor Brown of Turner; three great grandchildren, Ian and Caleb Austin of Roxbury and Brooke Austin of Plymouth, N.H.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Maurine Marston and Patricia Braley; and two brothers, Ralph and Robert Brown.
