Barbara was born to Geraldine and James Bernard O'Kane. An angel and loving family members were with her when she peacefully joined her husband, Loring "Pat" Milligan, and son, Michael in heaven.
She graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and St. Joseph College. She started her teaching career in Canton. Her career spanned 25 years of teaching English and Latin classes at Stephens and Rumford high schools.
She was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Catholic Church and a member of the Daughters of Isabella.
From cheerleading advisor to being named "Classicist of the Year," she put her heart and soul into her work. She and the members of her Latin Club traveled to Rome and were granted an audience with the Pope. She considered her greatest rewards to be the accomplishments of her students and followed any news of their success.
Being passionate about teaching was one aspect of her life, but she was even more passionate about the caring, sharing, and molding the lives of her five children.
As time passed, her children had children, and she became the loving, involved grandmother.
She leaves behind two sons, James L. Milligan, and wife, Deborah, of Gorham and T. Martin Milligan, and wife, Patricia, of Westport, Conn.; two daughters, Mary L. Colongeli, and husband, James, of Franconia, N.H. and Barbara A Tuthill, and husband, William, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Sherry Milligan of Rumford; a sister, Geraldine Bernard, and husband, Louis "Pete," of Bangor; a brother, James Bernard O'Kane Jr., and wife, Doris, of Brewer; and 10 grandchildren, Katie Warren, Bess Milligan, Sean Milligan, Ryan Milligan, Erin Milligan, Christopher Colongeli, Nicholas Colongeli, Karissa Tuthill, Michael Tuthill and Kailey Tuthill.
She was predeceased by her husband, Loring A. "Pat" Milligan in 1996; and a son, Michael P. Milligan in 2003.
We will remember her as a loving mother, devoted wife, wonderful grandmother, dedicated teacher and loyal friend. She is now at peace and surrounded by the family members she has missed so dearly.
If desired, contributions in her memory may be made to the Milligan Family Scholarship Fund, c/o Mountain Valley High School, 799 Hancock St., Rumford, ME 04276.
