Then-Delaware County Sheriff Jim Earp also was shot while he and Smith were trying to take a gun away from the man. Earp was grazed in the forearm by a bullet. Smith's injuries left him a quadriplegic, and he took medical retirement. Smith was the 32nd OHP trooper to die as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty.
