son of Ralph Leon Smith & Audrie Burrows Smith, father of Blake Smith & Stephanie Smith, brother of Ronnie Smith, graduate of the 48th Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy in 1995 and was assigned to the Delaware County detachment.

He was shot in the neck during a 1999 standoff in a cemetery near Bernice with a man who had killed his wife and was attempting to commit suicide. Then-Delaware County Sheriff Jim Earp also was shot while he and Smith were trying to take a gun away from the man. Earp was grazed in the forearm by a bullet. Smith's injuries left him a quadriplegic, and he took medical retirement. Smith was the 32nd OHP trooper to die as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty.
