DEATH OF ELI SHUFLER
The following relative to the death of Eli Shufler, father of Mrs. T. L. Newton and Mrs. Mary Withers of this city is taken from the Polo News-Herald of February 11th issue. Mr. Shufler had frequently visited his daughters here.

"Eli Shufler died at the home of his son, J. D., in Polo Wednesday morning, February 3, at 4 o'clock. He had been feeling better than usual the few days preceding and his death was unexpected. Just before 4 o'clock he called his son to his room and is a few minutes he had passed away.

"He was the son of William Shufler and wife of Marion, Indiana, where he was born January 12, 1840. He was 86 years and 21 days old at his death. When he was ten years old, the family moved to Mulford, Illinois, where he lived until the spring of 1861, when he enlisted in Company E, 76th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers and served his country until he was mustered out in 1865.

"He was in the South during all his service in the Union Army and was engaged in some of the hottest battles of the Civil War. He was with Grant and suffered many hardships attendant to that general's campaign. He was at the battle of Vicksburg where many men were lost to both the South and Union Army. While a man of small stature, he performed the duties of a soldier well and was justly proud of his record in helping preserve the Union.

"Soon after being mustered out he went to Kansas where he remained a short time, then moving near Kingston and from there to a farm near Knoxville. Twenty-eight years ago he came to Polo where he had lived most of the time since.

In 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna E. Barnhart and to this union three children were born. One son, J. D. Shufler, of Polo, two daughters, Mrs. Lulu Newton and Mrs. Mary Withers, both of Nevada, Missouri. He was converted about 40 years ago and since coming to Polo has been a faithful member and attendant at the United Brethren Church here. For a number of years he was a member of the church board and parsonage trustee. He leaves besides his three children, one sister, Mrs. S. P. Mabee, of Lockwood, Missouri, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, besides a host of loyal friends.

"The funeral services were held at the U. B. Church Thursday, February 4, at 2 0'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. W. Davies, who used the text 'We all do fade as a leaf,' Isaiah 64:6.

"Every seat in the church was occupied, his many friends there to pay their last respects to one they had esteemed as a friend."
