Gardner, Joseph Robert

GARDNER, JOSEPH ROBERT, age 68, of Trussville, died at home on April 15, 2005. He was born on February 5, 1937 in Gadsden, AL. As the son of a navy officer, he attended school in various places including Auburn University where he met his future wife, Sandra. He served in the U.S. Navy until 1963 when he was honorably discharged. He was one of the youngest Deputies to join the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department in the 1960s and retired as Lieutenant after 34 years of service as a peace officer. Known to his friends in law enforcement as 'Snake', he was a member of the Jefferson County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 64 and was very active in the FOP at the state and national level. His parents, Clifford Andrew Gardner and Gladys Walker Gardner, and his sisters, Jimmie Ruth Gardner and Alda Walker Copeland and his nephew, Joe David Copeland, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandra Starnes Gardner, his daughter, Paige Gardner Smith, his son Patrick Starnes Gardner, daughter-in-law, Tammy Lauderdale Gardner and son-in-law, James Kearney Smith III, his grandchildren Kearney Brann Smith, Houston Graham Smith, Gabrielle Dianne Gardner, Malcolm Hugh Smith, Rowan Maeve Smith and John Michael Gardner, his mother-in-law, Mrs. Houston E. Starnes; his uncle, Victor Dobrola, his nephew, Barry Copeland and many Gardner, Walker and Carden cousins. He is also survived by his special fraternal brother, Charles Horton. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005 at Ridout's-Brown Trussville Chapel. Funeral service with Reverend Barry Britt and Reverend Gary Lawson will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with entombment immediately following at the mausoleum in Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville.
