Samuel James Browne
Birth: Oct. 3, 1824
Death: Mar. 14, 1901

ndian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Barrackpore, India, he served as a Captain in command of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry, British Indian Army. In an engagement with the rebel forces under Khan Allie Khan, on August 31, 1858, Captain Browne advancing upon the enemy's position at day break. Reaching a nine-pound cannon that was protecting one of the approaches to the enemy's position, he attacked. He prevented the gun from re-loading and firing upon his following infantry. In doing so he was severely sword cut on the left arm at the shoulder but succeeded in cutting down one of his assailants and slay the gunners. For most prestigious gallantry, he was invested with his Victoria Cross by Major General Sir S. Cotton at Peshawar, India, in December 1862 and later achieved the rank of General. He also invented the Sam Browne Belt, which was known as 'Shambrun Sahib' by the Indian soldiers. He died at his home in Ryde, Isle of Wight, England, at the age of 76. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
