Born in in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, he was a second baseman making his debut for the Philadelphia Athletics on April 15, 1924. For twelve season he played with the Philadelphia Athletics (1924-33) and Boston Red Sox in (1934-35). For three consecutive seasons (1929-31), he played for the Philadelphia Athletics in 18 World Series games without committing an error. He ended his career with a record of 1216 hits, 966 runs scored, 41 homeruns, 379 runs batted in, 2.71 batting average and a .976 fielding percentage. After he retired, he was the head baseball coach at the US Navy Academy Maryland, 1938 to 1962, posting a record of 306 wins and 143 loss. He died at age 62 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
