Sunny Jim Bottomley
Birth: Apr. 23, 1900
Death: Dec. 11, 1959

Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Oglesby, Illinois, he was a first baseman dubbed "Sunny Jim" because of his cheerful disposition, making his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on August 18, 1922. For sixteen seasons, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1922-32), Cincinnati Reds (1933-35) and St. Louis Browns (1936-37), with 1937, as a player-manager. Through the coarse of his career, he led the Cardinals to the World Series Championships in 1926, 1931, was voted Most Valuable Player in 1928 and holds the single-season record for most unassisted double plays by a first baseman, with eight. He ended his playing time with 2313 hits, 1177 runs scored, 219 homeruns, 1422 runs batted in, a .310 batting average and a .988 fielding percentage. He died in St. Louis, Missouri, at age 59 and was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
