Captain Kind was indeed a true ships captain, having served for over 27 years with the Ward Steamship Lines of England. Ships he served upon sailed to many U.S. ports during that time. He was a native of Sussex, England and a graduate of the London School of Engineering. King George V was said to have made his first trip overseas aboard a ship with Capt. Kind at the helm. Capt. Kind came to live in the U.S. about 1890 and later joined the military. He was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps in Norfolk, Va. at a U.S. Army base during World War I.
