William lived on Limestone Road, Marshallton, Delaware and served as a Messman with the Merchant Marines during World War II.

His Oil Tanker, the S.S. Joseph M. Cudahy, was struck by an enemy torpedo in the Gulf of Mexico and sunk.

William was declared "Missing In Action" during the war and was awarded the Mariner's Medal.
