Veta Eunice Epps Gorman, 94, of Southern Pines died on August 24, 2013. She was born on December 6, 1918, in Goldsboro, NC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Herbert Gorman, who died in the Normandy Invasion. Douglas and Veta had a daughter, Diana Carol, who grew up in Southern Pines.

Mrs. Gorman was also preceded in death by her parents, Herman Leslie and Julia Catherine Tyndall Epps; and four siblings, Sybil Eugenia Epps Austin, Kenneth Morris Epps, Durward Lee Epps, and Audrey Rose Epps Medlin.

Mrs. Gorman graduated from Louisburg College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a poet, painter, potter, and a devoted elementary school teacher who remembered all of her students even into her 90s. She was a dedicated member of The Church of Wide Fellowship/Community Congregational Church and co-authored the church history. Some of her artwork hangs in the hallway of the church. Writing was one of her great loves. She was one of the authors of Quintessence, a book of poetry written by five friends. Her poetry appeared every week in The Pilot as part of the Arts Council of Moore County's column, "Soundings." She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa and the American Association of University Women, and an Arts Council volunteer.

After her retirement from Moore County Schools, she traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and the United States. She particularly enjoyed walking through the botanic gardens at Sandhills Community College, and "wogging" -- her unique combination of walking and jogging -- by the duck pond in her neighborhood. She could often be found digging a new garden in her back yard. She was never happier than when holding her great-granddaughter Julia -- although enjoying coffee and chocolate came a close second.

Mrs. Gorman is survived by her beloved daughter, Diana Carol Gorman Stewart, and son-in-law, James Courtland Stewart, of Christiansburg, VA; grandson, James Gorman Stewart of Christiansburg, VA; grandson, Courtland Alexander Stewart of Cary, NC; granddaughter, Elizabeth Julia Stewart Johnson, grandson-in-law, Robert Stephen Johnson Jr., and great-granddaughter, Julia Faith Johnson, of Christiansburg, VA; and many other relatives and special friends who meant the world to her.

The family would like to thank Penick Village, Elmcroft of Southern Pines, and Aging Outreach for their care over the last few years.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday10:00AM-11:00AM at Community Congregational Church. A service will follow at 11:00AM at the church. Interment Pinelawn Cemetery.

She when she graduated from college, she was listed as living in Aberdeen, North Carolina
