The son of Abner and Eliza A (Harmon) Burbank, he was an 1860 graduate of Bowdoin College and had begun learning law when the Civil War broke out. He served as Quartermaster Sergeant with the 27th Maine, 1862-1863, and was a 1st Lt and Captain in the 32nd Maine, 1864-1865. While with the latter unit, he was captured during the Battle of Burnside's Mine (Petersburg) on 30 July '64, and confined to a prison in Columbia, SC. Escaping with others in Feb '65, he made his way back north, where he was discharged due to his pow disability in May.
Following the war, he worked for the York County court system, including positions of County Attorney and Register of Probate.
