Daughter of Holland Manning and his first wife, Martha Jane Gibson, of Marlboro County, South Carolina.

On October 20, 1897, at age 21, Della became the 2nd wife of Alexander Calhoun McLeod of nearby Richmond County, North Carolina. They were 2nd cousins, once removed. Their common ancestors are Nelson Gibson, Jr. and Rutha Dawkins. They were married in Laurel Hill, Richmond County, at the home of Catherine Estelle Manning (Della's sister) and her husband, Jeptha Dargan Gibson, by N.M.N. Smith, Minister, M.E. Church South.

There were already five children, age 10 and under, in the household. This was a family of farmers. In 1902, they moved a few miles east to the small rural community of Buie in Burnt Swamp Township, Robeson County, NC.

During their 8-1/2 years together, Della and A.C. had three children. Della's younger sister, Martha Ventress "Pattie" Manning also lived in the household until her marriage in December 1902. Older sister Catherine Estelle Manning Gibson lived close by -- first in Laurel Hill and later in Red Springs, Robeson County.

In 1906, within three months of the birth of her 3rd child, Della passed away. She was 29 years old. Della is buried at Philadelphus Presbyterian Church Cemetery, which is only a few miles from her home in Buie. In 1906, there was a large, nationally known school on the adjoining property to the cemetery. This is where her children grew up and went to school.

While her husband remarried for a 3rd time and had three additional children, many of these children as adults have been laid to rest over the years next to, or near, Della. They are John Alexander McLeod and James Rufus McLeod from A.C.'s first marriage, to whom Della became stepmother; her eldest son Norman Carroll McLeod, his wife Mildred Rosalee Powell McLeod and their daughter Sarah Manning McLeod Osborne; and a son from A.C.'s 3rd marriage, Archie Hilburn McLeod, his wife Susan Alice Buie McLeod and son Archie Hilburn McLeod Jr. James Rufus, his wife and two adult children are in a separate plot. He was a toddler when Della became his stepmother.

A.C. buried his first wife, Ida Cornelia Bennett, at Green Lake UMC Cemetery in Richmond County, next to his parents. He also was laid to rest there in 1944, along with his third wife, Mary Catherine Terry in 1947.

Della seems to have had a lasting impact on the family, since so many of the McLeod children are buried with her. She was probably influential in convincing A.C. to relocate from Richmond County to Robeson County. Both had family living in nearby Red Springs.
