He was the son of James Samuel McCluskey and Amanda Fitzallen Childs. He served in the Confederacy as the Captain in command of the infamous "McCluskey Sharp-Shooters", Co. C. 5th Alabama Calvary. (McCluskey, J.D. Captain Company C,
