Royal Engineers
British Army

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Spr Watson, a member of the Counter-IED Task Force, as a result of an explosion near Patrol Base Blenheim, close to Sangin in Helmand Province. He was on patrol carrying out controlled explosions of improvised explosive devices.

He was awarded Top Student after basic training and also completed paratrooper and commando training. He was on his first operational tour of duty. Known to his friends as "The Leg" for his outstanding athletic fitness, he also enjoyed fell running and mountain biking.

A statement from his family said in part, "Dearly beloved Son, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, David. He always managed to achieve above and beyond the goals that he set for himself often going that extra mile to achieve beyond the bounds of what was expected of him. He loved life itself and all of its challenges. David's dry sense of humour combined with his ability to articulate any situation into a moment of laughter were two of his many talents. He was loved by all. The Army was his career which he loved the most and his achievements whilst serving in the Army show his genuine commitment and determination to serve his country proud. He lived his dream and did what a true soldier is ready to do for his country, a true hero".

Spr Watson is survived by his parents, John and Anne, his sister Michelle, other family and friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on January 19, 2010 at St Mary's Church in Whickham.

The UK has lost 245 service personnel from operations in Afghanistan since 2001 with
108 killed in 2009 alone.
