Luca Marenzio
Birth: 1553
Death: Aug. 22, 1599

Composer. He is regarded as the greatest composer of Italian partsongs. Born in Coccaglia, near Brescia, Italy, he was probably trained as a choirboy at Brescia Cathedral. In 1578 he was brought to Rome by Cardinal Luigi d'Este, who sponsored his early career; he later served with the Medici family in Florence (1587 to 1589) and at the Warsaw court of King Sigismund III of Poland (1596 to 1597). In recognition of his achievements he was granted lodgings in the Vatican, a rare honor for a layman, and shortly before his death he was named musician to the Papal Court. Marenzio's short vocal works were extremely popular in their day, and with their variety of subject matter (ranging from light romance to contemplations of death), evocative word painting, and intensity of expression, they are virtually unmatched in Renaissance music. He wrote approximately 400 madrigals, mostly for five or six unaccompanied voices; published in 23 collections between 1581 and 1599, they were frequently reprinted and spread his fame throughout Europe. Monteverdi, Gesualdo, and John Dowland in England were among those influenced by him. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
